Task 6: Who is Vladimir Propp? (Research)

Vladimir Propp and his Theory
Yakovlevich Propp was a Russian and Soviet formalist scholar, born on April 17, 1895. He analyzed the basic plot components of Russian folk tales to identify their simplest irreducible narrative elements. His Morphology of the Folk Tale was published in Russian in 1928. His character types are used in media education and can be applied to almost any story, be it in literature, theatre, film, television series, games, etc.
Vladimir Propp extended the Russian Formalist approach to the study of narrative structure. In the Formalist approach, sentence structures were broken down into analyzable elements, or morphemes, and Propp used this method by analogy to analyze Russian fairy tales. By breaking down a large number of Russian folk tales into their smallest narrative units, or narratemes, Propp was able to arrive at a typology of narrative structures. Propp remained a faculty member until his death in 1970.
His theory included the following 31 functions:
  1. ABSENTATION: A member of a family leaves the security of the home environment.
  2. TRICKERY: The villain attempts to deceive the victim to take possession of victim or victim's belongings (trickery; villain disguised, tries to win confidence of victim).
  3. COMPLICITY: Victim taken in by deception, unwittingly helping the enemy.
  4. VILLAINY or LACK: Villain causes harm/injury to family member
  5. FIRST FUNCTION OF THE DONOR: Hero is tested, interrogated, attacked etc., preparing the way for his/her receiving magical agent or helper (donor).
  6. HERO'S REACTION: Hero reacts to actions of future donor
  7. RECEIPT OF A MAGICAL AGENT: Hero acquires use of a magical agent
  8. GUIDANCE: Hero is transferred, delivered or led to whereabouts of an object of the search.
  9. STRUGGLE: Hero and villain join in direct combat;
  10. LIQUIDATION: Initial misfortune or lack is resolved
  11. RETURN: Hero returns

ASHANTI- 'FOOLISH'

In this video, the villain has cheated on his wife. His wife send him away as a form of punishment. After a while, the villain recognizes his actions and returns home. the hero lets him back in and the situation is resolved. However at the end, he gives a look direct at the camera , which looks as though he has achieved his goal and seems a little trickery.

Task 9: Final song choice (Planning)

I chose this song because it has a colourful meaning with a young couple being in love.We are going to use a floral theme to interpret the song, this links with the flowers complements it . This relates to  Andrew Goodwin's theory in terms of our video being illustration as it shows a girl being in love with her boyfriend. The prop of having the book starting with it opening highlights the story of a blossoming romance, which Natasha Bedingfield's song does not use. As Bedingfield's song only uses the male character briefly at the end.

Task 9: Final song choice

My Groups final song choice is Natasha Beddingfield-These Words. We are going to take the theme of summer love and create our own interpretation of it. Our video is going to be very colourful and summery. Its going to show a love between a young girl and her boyfriend. The song is quite upbeat and lively so it should be a fun video.

Task 9: Final Song Choice (Planning)

Natasha Bedingfield- "These Words"

Our video will be similar to the original video in some way because we too are going to use many bright colours. The video is very precise with the editing as it goes with the beat and has many special effects too, which help to portray a fun mood. However, our video will differ from the original because our narration is completely different. We will use a scrapbook to illustrate the relationship between the female character and male character. When the book is opened, the video will show scenes of the young couple together. In relation to Andrew Goodwin's theory, our video will be an example of illustration. The lyric 'I love you' is repeated several times, and by showing a couple in love, portrays the meaning. In the original video, there is less of the male character and more of Natasha Bedingfield. We will use many floral prints to show a colourful video and use the green screen to use many effective backgrounds. Our video will be more romantic, than fun.

Final Song Choice

Final song choice
Natasha Bedingfield - These Words

My group's final song choice is Natasha Bedingfields's "These Words". We chose to do this video because we all decided that it fit the genre and audience that we wanted to portray. Our video differs from the original video in several ways. First, we plan on using locations that are more with nature. We plan to film where there are lots of flowers grass and even a fountain. The camera work will differ as we plan on editing our video differently. We are planning on using many different shots and making the video a little more upbeat when it comes to the camerawork and editing. Our costume differs from the original video, as we are going to use more colours to fit with our location, which will also be very colourful.

Audience Task 2 (planning)

Key Characteristics of our audience on Wordle.

Audience Task (Planning)

Emily Bloom is 16 years old. She is an Anglo Portuguese fashionista who lives in Hampstead. She is currently a student and helps out her mum in her art galleries on Saturdays. In the evening, she normally goes to concerts to watch some of her favourite artists. These include the likings of Natasha Bedingfield, Florence and the Machine, La Roux and Pixie Lott. Emily does her food shopping at Sainsbury's which is convenient because it is near her house.

In her spare time, Emily is on her Blackberry updating her profile on Facebook, shopping and socialising with her friends. On the way to school, she picks up the Metro.  She enjoys keeping up with the latest fashion trends and buys monthly copies of 'Vogue'. Emily travels mainly on the bus and underground. However, she prefers to take the tube if its rush hour because it is faster. Emily is constantly downloading free music and listens to them on her I-pod.

The brands that attract Emily are Topshop, Miss Selfridges and Office because these companies all keep up with forthcoming trends in fashion to keep Emily up to date with the new styles. Also, Starbucks Coffee is a brand that she needs to buy her coffee and meet up with friends for a chat.
Emily buys most of her clothes from H&M, Topshop and Miss Selfridges because their clothes are elegant for young girls to wear and they are very stylish.

Emily's favourite drink are hot chocolate because it keeps her warm in the winter. Emily being a chocoholic, picks up a hot chocolate on her way to school everyday. She enjoys a chilled bottle of Coke with her in  the summer.

Emily dreams of going to New York to pursue her future fashion career but she'd rather goes back to Lisbon to visit her Grandmother. Though,  her mother is planning to take her to Milan where the fashion  scene is always changing and the exquisite trends are more flamboyant than the London scene.

Emily enjoys the simple beats that Natasha Bedingfield's sings, which makes her enjoys this song. Also, her best friend and her sing this song together. This pop genre is fun and footloose but it is a bit of a guilty pleasure for Emily. Emily belongs to psychographic profile of being an aspirer because the latest fashions,  magazines, gadgets and lifestyles are extremely important to this suburban teenagerer.
