Task 1: Music Video Analysis (research)

Leona Lewis- 'I Got You'

Leona Lewis' video for the song 'I Got You' from her album 'Echo' consists of the theme 'love'. There is connotations of this from a large love-heart shaped flame, which is shown behind Leona in a shot of her singing. This indicates that the song is about love. The narrative in the video illustrates the lyrics. There are many different couples, who are currently going through bad times in their relationships. Leona Lewis is not included in the narration of the song and is shown in different shots alone to show that she is simply the singer. This helps to make her stand out and show that this is the voice of the song. This also makes her seem as though she is telling a story in the video. Soon after the bridge of the song, the narration changes and this time, there are shots shown of the couples reuniting and making up. The different shots help to demonstrate the meaning of the lyrics- although couples do face tough obstacles in their relationship, they do still love each other and know that they can run to each other when in need. ("When you need a place to run to, for better or worse I got you").

Leona Lewis is a RnB/ Pop singer, so this video goes by the same genre. We can recognise this genre by the video as well as the song. Then editing is very soft and gentle and flows with the music and doesn't include heavy drumming, so we can identify that this video is not from a heavy metal genre. The video does not consist of half naked women and men in clubs and driving cars either, which is very typical of a Hip Hop video. This video is very linear to that of a RnB video as it includes romance. The media language helps to make the audience feel more empathetic with this video. Most shots are edited in slow motion to help portray a slow, calm feeling. This works well with Leona's voice as she has a soprano range and extends some words. The video almost targets everyone as it is about love and nearly all individuals in the world have fallen in love at least once and can understand what these narrations are trying to show and can also remind them of a particular time in their relationship. However, some may not like RnB music, which may mean that they would not like listening to it. The narrations are intended to make the audience feel touched because it is a phase that most love ones go through.

At the start of the song, there are shots shown for a couple of seconds each and the faded effect is used as the shots change, which gives a slow and gentle vibe to the video. There are tears, anger and sadness shown in this video, which connects the narration to the song. Leona Lewis plays a big part to this song and to the narration as she is a singer-songwriter and may have written this song herself. The video is emotional and effective due to the media language. The slow motion editing and different angle shots help to show the characters facial
expressions and body languages more clearly. After the bridge of the song, the shots begin to change at a faster pace as the song builds up. The editing is very precise on the beat, which makes this video more effective and interesting to watch.

The video does not portray certain social groups in a bad way, so the representation is not too negative. The characters
in this video are of different genres, so present love and unity. The video is not discriminative against civil partnerships as there is a shot shown of a lesbian couple. The characters shown in the video are from different ethnic backgrounds too. The representation in this video helps to make it appeal to a larger target audience as it is quite equal. However, the females in the narration are shown crying, looking in a state with their hair messed up, make-up smudged and very upset, indicating that women are weak and cannot hide their emotions. In contrast, the males in this video are shown throeing things from mountains and taking their anger on whatever is around them, portraying that men are aggressive.

There is variety of different shots at different locations, which portrays different lifestyles and surroundings. One shot that i found quite effective was the shot of Leona on the side of the camera, with the large love-heart flamed blurred in the background. The fire connotes heat, which relates with anger and it is almost trying to symbolise the end of a relationship or era. The editing goes well with the song and the narration helps to express the lyrics.
